Chance took a quick look at the kitchen clock before stepping outside to the darkened patio. It was almost five in the morning. It would be a while yet before the dawn light brightened the night sky. He had been careful not to wake Marcie when he slipped out of bed. There was no reason for her to be awake simply because he could not sleep.

Their night together had been everything he had hoped it would be...and everything he feared it might be. He was enthralled, elated, ecstatic...and in love.

And he was scared to death.

He could not imagine life without Marcie Roper, but he did not know if he could do what needed to be done to ensure that it would always be that way. He did not know if he was capable of making a lifelong commitment to her and to a relationship—a lifelong commitment that should mean marriage. How could he rationalize the way he felt when he believed that marriage was nothing more than a worthless piece of paper?

He stood at the edge of the pool staring at the water. Life would have been so much simpler if only he had allowed the photographer to take his picture. He executed a dive from the edge of the pool and swam the length under water. He had hoped it would wash away his doubts and concerns, but he had been mistaken. When he surfaced at the other end, nothing had changed. He ducked back under water and shoved off again.

When he resurfaced this time he saw Marcie standing on the pool deck, looking down at him. She had taken his shirt and wrapped it around her like a robe. She looked as if she’d just woken up, her face still carrying the residual signs of sleep. He felt the swell of emotion surge through his body the moment he focused in on her.

“I’m sorry if I woke you up. I tried to be as quiet as I could.” He moved through the water along the edge of the pool until he reached the place where she stood.

“You didn’t wake me.” She extended a warm smile. “How long have you been up?” Her heart fluttered with excitement as she sat on the edge of the pool and dangled her legs in the surprisingly warm water.

“Not very long.” He playfully tugged on her ankle as he shot her a decidedly lascivious look. “Why don’t you join me? It won’t be daylight for a little while yet, so you won’t need to find a swimsuit.” He ran his hand along the curve of her calf, then nestled his body at the edge of the pool between her legs. Her excitement increased as he slid his hands along her thighs, then up under the shirt.

She could barely catch her breath as he planted his forearms on the decking on either side of her and raised his body up out of the water. He leaned forward and nuzzled his face into the opening of the shirt.
